Once In A Blue Moon? Funny You’d Say That..

The month of August brings us not one, but two full moons. The first will kick off the month on Wednesday (Aug.1), and will be followed by a second on Aug. 31.

Some almanacs and calendars assert that when two full moons occur within a calendar month, the second full moon is called a “blue moon.”

The full moon that night will likely look no different than any other full moon. But the moon can change color in certain conditions.

After forest fires or volcanic eruptions, the moon can appear to take on a bluish or even lavender hue. Soot and ash particles, deposited high in the Earth’s atmosphere, can sometimes make the moon appear bluish. Smoke from widespread forest fire activity in western Canada created a blue moon across eastern North America in late September 1950. In the aftermath of the massive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in June 1991 there were reports of blue moons (and even blue suns) worldwide.

Yes, my science can explain this. Evolution in a sentence: during reproduction, DNA copying is never 100% accurate and so children are often differentiated from their parents by small changes or mutations in their DNA—and over a long enough period of time, new species evolve from chains of these mutations.
With this in mind, the first chicken must have hatched from a chicken egg, but that egg must have come from a slightly different species—almost, but not quite, what we would call chickens. So, two-non-chicken parents of an egg laying species created an egg, and thanks to small genetic mutations, a chicken was born. This mutation was probably very subtle, but it was enough to fulfil our criteria for what a chicken is.
Now you can unleash your science during discussions about this ancient question, and correctly answer: the egg.

Mitt Romney’s Foreign Policy Senior Advisor, Rich Williamson, Refers to Russia as “Soviet Union”

21 years behind in foreign policy

Republicans are perpetually stuck in the past…not just on domestic policy but on foreign policy as well.

I can picture someone like me making this mistake.  To me, it would just be a brain fart, and I admit I can be dumb as a rock sometimes.  But as much as I’d like to give this guy a break, he’s a FOREIGN policy adviser and supposedly an expert.  Russia plays a rather significant roll in foreign policy.  I just can’t quite let this slide.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Since Friday’s massacre at a Colorado movie theater that killed 12, a number of Facebook pages have popped up paying tribute to alleged shooter James Holmes.
The largest and most horrifying page, written as if by Holmes himself, was launched Friday, before many of the victims had even been identified. The frequent posts are intended to shock — they mock the victims of the shooting, and one includes a Photoshopped image of Holmes receiving the Medal of Honor from President Obama.
Now, four days later, the page remains active, despite numerous requests to Facebook to shut it down:

The anonymous author of the fan page has commented on nearly every photo and is often ridiculing people who are expressing their disgust at the page that many have commented, “goes too far” and is “too soon.” He also has posted a note that says the page has been reported numerous times to Facebook and “nothing has happened.”
It’s not possible to tell how often or if the page has been flagged by other users, but it features comments from thousands of Facebook users who are calling for its deletion using profanity-laced language and threats to the faux Facebook Holmes.

Still, it’s heartening that most of the reactions have been negative. Here’s the best Facebook comment, as judged by Denver blogger Michael Roberts:

The amount of comments against this kind of humor is actually a positive thing. I’m glad that although many people cannot spell or use grammar, they are still not as f**ked up as I thought Americans were. ♥ oh and whoever made this page needs to be sterilized.

Today my hometown was struck by a disgusting hardship.

A woman this afternoon was found by a neighbor, bleeding and naked. She was attacked in her home because she was gay. Two or more men broke into her home through the basement and proceeded to tag her basement. They found the homeowner, who is an open lesbian, and stabbed, assaulted, and carved “dyke” into her chest. They attempted to burn her house to the ground, but the gas only sparked. Somehow, this woman (who remains anonymous until she decides to come out on her own time) was able to escape. She was found naked, bound with zip ties, and bloody. She is still alive and in the hospital. A candle light vigil was held in her name tonight, where more than 500 people from Lincoln and surrounding cities and states joined to talk about the hate and to pay homage to the victim.

A recovery fund has been set up to help her cover medical bills and anything she may need. That link can be found here, along with a link from the original news story.
