"I kind of stumbled onto a new combination of meds. I thought, ‘There’s no reason not to work.’ And so I started to accept more work."

Michael J. Fox, in an interview with Diane Sawyer earlier this year. Fox, 51, has been out of the show business limelight for many years, after going public with his diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease in 1998 and leaving behind TV to focus on his health, and helping the effort to discover a cure. Now, fourteen years later, Fox’s drug regimen has improved to the point that he feels it’s time to return to the screen with a regular gig — an NBC sitcom. We couldn’t be happier for him – and he was great on Curb Your Enthusiasm last year, too. (via shortformblog)

"Perhaps most of all, though, you deserve to be okay. You deserve to know that a day in which you can just barely get out of bed because you are sad, or sick, or simply not ready to see the outside is not the end of the world. You deserve to know that moments of weakness do not make you fundamentally weak, only fundamentally human, and that sometimes we’re not going to be effusively happy, and that is okay. You deserve to be happy just existing and not constantly holding yourself up to a standard of fake smiles and forced cheerfulness. You deserve to not beat yourself up when you do not reach perfect acceptance of your body, your personality, the love you receive, or anything else that may come your way. Though you should know that you are worthy of these things, learning to be happy just in a kind of stasis with yourself is a long process, and you should know that we are all working on it. You deserve to live through all of your emotions, all of your states of motivation, and know that as long as you are treating everyone with kindness (including yourself), you have nothing to be ashamed of."

Obit of the Day: “E.T.’s Geppetto”
Hollywood’s friendliest alien and its scariest were both designed by the same man, Carlo Rambaldi. Rambaldi designed the wide-eyed, long-necked, heart-warming E.T. for Steven Spielberg’s* 1982 classic. Three years earlier he designed the metallic, sharp-toothed, stomach-residing alien from Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror masterpiece, Alien.
Both other-worldy creatures earned Mr. Rambaldi Academy Awards for visual effects.
Rambaldi, a graduate of the Academy Fine Arts of Bologna (Italy), began working in films in 1957. He came to wide notice for his work on the Italian horror film Deep Red and was brought to L.A. by Dino DeLaurentis to assist in the 1976 remake of King Kong. His work on that film earned him a special achievement Oscar, along with Glen Robinson and Frank Van der Veer. He remained forever a traditionalist dismissing CGI (computer-based effects) as too costly and time-consuming, proudly reminding people that E.T. was created in three months for $1 million. The effects master passed away at the age of 86.
* Spielberg was the person who gave Rambaldi the nickname “E.T.’s Geppetto.”

"Learn to get in touch with the innermost essence of your being. This true essence is beyond the ego. It is fearless; it is free; it is immune to criticism; it does not fear any challenge. It is beneath no one, superior to no one, and full of magic, mystery, and enchantment."
